As a tattoo artist, naturally he’s frequently requested to cover bad tattoos. In this video, Record consults with a client who is not satisfied with his Buddha tattoo and wants it replaced with a larger, high-definition Buddha face. “What type of tattoo would you want to place over this?” Record asks, not to determine if what the client wants is possible, but instead to help him, as the artist, ascertain what part of the old tattoo needs to go – and what part can stay – to provide the client with exactly the coverup he wants.
Because the Buddha head will have a great deal of color, Record says the focus will need to be on removing the blacks and the line work. “Once we have the actual design that’s going to go there, we can see what black we can actually keep, which means you won’t have to remove all of it,” Record tells the client.
He explains the Tatt2Away process to the client and how it differs from laser, noting that Tatt2Away is done in small sections, unlike laser, which “hits the whole piece, essentially causing little nuclear explosions to break down the ink on a molecular level.” Record describes how Tatt2Away physically lifts the ink up and out of the skin. “To do that, we have to remove the epidermis. So your ink sits in that layer between your epidermis and your dermis. We need to get rid of the epidermis to get to where ink actually is.”
As Record illustrates to his client, Tatt2Away uses a template to create small, uniform circles that remove the epidermis, exposing the ink. As the wound heals from the outside in and the bottom up, the ink is lifted up and out, forming a scab-like eschar containing the removed ink, a process that usually takes about two to three weeks. The client is then left with brand new, bright pink skin, which Record compares to a freshly popped blister. “It’s really new, it’s really thin, it’s really sensitive.”
For a client, this means the possibility of getting a DEScoverup within just a few months of the final Tatt2Away treatment, another benefit compared to laser. Says Record, “With laser it can take several years to remove a tattoo. I know that from experience. It took nine years for my tattoos to be removed. Then I waited another five years before I had them tattooed again.”
