As a tattoo artist, naturally he’s frequently requested to cover up bad tattoos. In this second video of this three-part series, Record uses the template to show the client how he’ll go about the treatment plan to selectively remove what the client has in order to give the client the DEScoverup he wants. “In something like this the first thing we really need to do is concentrate on the black,” Record tells the client, indicating the virtually solid black section needing full removal. “The rest of it is really line work,” Record notes, pointing to the black lines outlining the Buddha’s gown and its folds.
He shows the client the template, an adhesive rectangle with precisely spaced 5mm dots in it, still with its white backing on, and elaborates on how the two areas needing attention will form the three-session treatment plan. Much of the template will be used on the branches behind the Buddha. Then focusing again on the line work, Record explains how he plans to use the template to lay a row of dots along the lines of the Buddha’s knee and the folds of his robe.
He tells the client that pricing is generally based per template, but because he will be using only part of the template on the solid black, and will still be able to do the majority of the line work in the first session, the client will end up saving money. After peeling off the template backing, Record holds the template up so the client can see the circles. “That’s what they’ve found to be the ideal size for maximal healing as well as pulling the ink out,” he says, then positioning it on the client’s arm and beginning to fill in the circles. He uses a single-use, sterile marker included in the same kit as the template.
While he’s coloring in the treatment dots to demonstrate the ink removal, he tells the client how in each of the successive three treatments, once the previous treatment is healed, he’ll use the template to treat between the dots of the previous treatment area. “In the third treatment, when I offset it yet again, that’s where we kind of do the cleanup and remove everything that’s left,” says Record.
The template measures the precise distance for removal and healing, making the dots far enough away to eliminate the risk of scarring, but close enough to promote bridge healing. Record demonstrates how the line work will be gone in two settings, while the solid work will be finished in three. The result, Record tells the client, is a polka-dotted look.
As he talks, he continues to move the template around, coloring in the dots, to demonstrate how each treatment builds on the previous one until the treatment plan is complete, the ink is gone, the area is healed, and the client’s DEScoverup – in this case, a high-definition, Buddha head – can begin.
